Water fell from the sky

Something amazing happened here this week – it rained! Now normally I would not make sure a big deal of rain, but I cannot remember the last time we had any significant rainfall. It has been the dryest summer this area has ever seen and there has been concern over water shortages and well drying up etc.

For one of the first times in my life I was really glad to see rain. We had two days of it on and off and some of it was really heavy with thunder and lightening etc.

Now the weather is predicted to be sunny and dry for the foreseeable, so it didn’t last long. Getting concerned about the well, but at the end of the day there is very little we can do about it.

Yesterday morning I heard a very loud band on the front door. We are used to getting birds hit our windows, but this was really loud. When we went out to investigate we found a rather dazed grouse. He (or she) had flown into our front door, how it did not see it I don’t know as it is large and white and surrounded by a large grey house!

I got my bird identification book out and discovered it was a Ruffed Grouse. The trouble was, it came round and flew straight into the door again. This time it was fatal and the poor thing died on our front step.

Birds really seem to be stupid here as not a day goes by without at least (usually several) birds hit our windows. Most don’t even seem to notice and just fly off, some are a little dazed and for the odd one or two it is the last thing they ever do. Strange!

Feeling hot, hot, hot

It is very hot here at present. We have been having temps in the high 20′s and low 30′s all summer, but it is now officially autumn and we are still sweltering. Yesterday it was 27C and today the high is going to be 31C with a humidex of 37C, phew!

Our squirrels were relaxing in the sun yesterday. We find them so amusing. They sit eating then suddenly just flake out and then within seconds are up again eating. It is as if they cannot keep still for more than half a minute.

The tree I have been keeping an eye on is now completely red and looking stunning.

When we drove by the other day someone else was parked up taking photos of it, so it is getting celebrity status. It will be charging admission soon. I will keep photographing it as the leaves start to fall.
