Pounded by the weather

The weather here has been all over the place. Generally hot, but we have had more rain in June than we had for the whole of last summer. Yesterday was a good example. We started off with sun and heat then in early afternoon we lost our internet connection. When we called the company they had a voice message saying they were experiencing problems across Ontario due to the adverse weather. At that time our weather was fine, but that was not to last!

Chris was happily watching football downstairs in the den (David Beckham’s team apparently). I decided to prepare dinner early as we were both starving, so decided to do a pork roast with roast potatoes and veg. After the above footy game he was looking forward to the Euro cup final – I think that’s what it’s called. Germany and Spain were playing and we had to support Spain because my aunt and uncle live out there. So, I was preparing dinner and Chris was watching footy – then the electric went!

We expected it to come back on pretty quick, but it didn’t. Still no panic, the food in the oven was still about 20 mins from being cooked so I left everything where it was and hoped the electric would come back on. Now we were getting thunder and lightening with heavy rain. By this time the football final had started and Chris was understandably a little annoyed by the outage. We decided to wait a while before resorting to the generator.

As we watched out the window at the storm we literally watched a band of rain and hail move over the countryside towards the house. You could actually see it coming towards us and suddenly we were in the middle of it. The hail pounded down and you couldn’t see anything out of the window – it was pretty amazing.

Ten minutes later the electric was still off so i phoned Hydro One our supplier to if there was any news. The recorded message said that they expected the power to be restored by 6pm – three hours away. So now it was generator time – the problem was we realized we had no gas in the generator as it had been used for the lawn mower. We couldn’t take it out of the car as it has a anti-syphon device, so we knew we would have to go into town to get a can of gas. Just as we came to this conclusion the lights came back on – erika – power!

I quickly got the oven back on an rescued the dinner. However the satellite TV was still out so no footy. After about 20 mins dinner was complete and was actually really nice. Whilst eating the rain was still pounding down and our mother killdeer was out in the middle of the front garden with all four babies under her protecting them from the onslaught. Suddenly even more rain came down and we watched as she suddenly rose up and darted for a group of trees we have followed by four fast moving babies. She then collected them all up under her and sat on them again. It was as if she had said, okay kids on the count of three….

The TV finally came on during half time and Chris rushed down to see the score and found he had missed a Spanish goal and for some reason they did not show the replay in the interval. However he did get to watch the rest of the game okay.

We had rain and hail for most of the rest of the day with it ending in sunny periods.

On another note – here are some recent animal pics:

Purple finches pay another visit

Isn’t he just the cutest?

We have the cutest baby bunny in the garden at the moment. I know he won’t always stay this way and will grow up to be a scraggy large rabbit, but for the moment he is officially cute!

We have had the grosbeak paying a visit too.

And here is a picture of one of the four killdeer babies.

And with mum

And now the squirrel climbing the pole to get to the bird feeder

It’s all action in the garden at the moment.
