I managed to get a photo of our strange little chipmunk this morning. He doesn’t see to realize that he should be tucked up in his burrow during the winter months. Instead he is out and about most days in the cold and the snow filling his cheek pouches with food and running back to his burrow time and time again. We have never seen chipmunks about this time of year before.

Here are some pics of one of the many rabbits (hares really) we have in the garden.

The deer keep returning too. We now have a regular group of four who come by two or three times each evening.

We also have a downy woodpecker who has started to become a daily visitor. This one is much smaller than the pair we had before and much much smaller than the hairy woodpeckers we get. This is him hanging from the bird feeder. This was one of the only pics that came out with out a fuzzy head as he never keeps it still!

An here is one of the hares who frequents the garden. Not to be confused with the many rabbits.

Today we had an appointment to see the new doctor in the area having waited almost two years without one. We arrived on time and had to give our medical cards to the receptionist and then got to see a nurse who took our height, weight, blood pressure etc. She asked us about allergies and hospital stays etc but not too much info. We then go to see the doctor who originates from England and has a very posh accent. He listened to our heart and lungs and that was pretty much it, we have a doctor, yippee!

This morning we saw one of our rabbits on our deck. He was under one of our chairs and them proceeded to nibble at them. God knows what he found to nibble on a painted wicker chair?

You can tell spring is in the air as many of the birds and animals in the garden are in frantic mating mode. The rabbits are galloping around the garden chasing each other. We had four in the garden last night all going crazy and bounding here and there.

We took these pics during one of their tea breaks!

The killdeer are also running round the garden. We still have a pair, so we want to see babies like last year soon.

This morning we had a male American goldfinch on the feeder. We see them quite a lot round here and the male changes colour from winter to summer. Here he is in full breeding colours.

The grackles, blackbirds and brown headed cowbirds are all in mating mode with the males all showing off to the females who rarely seem to show any interest. The females just carry on eating whilst the males are fluffing up their feathers telling them how handsome they are the females seem to say “yeah right”.

Well we are having another week of strange Ontario weather. We had heavy snow at the beginning of the week. Then we had a day of 100+ km/h winds, horizontal snow and temps of -25 with the wind chill on Wednesday. Thursday was lovely, most of the snow had gone because of the high winds, the sun was shining, although it was a bit cold still, but overall a great day. Today we have had lots of snow with promises of a total amount of around 25cm by tomorrow. And I thought the UK weather was unpredictable!

On Wednesday night we looked out the window after dark as saw two of the flying squirrels stuffing themselves withe nuts that had been left over by the red squirrels. They were really tiny and oh so cute. For anyone who isn’t familiar with flying squirrels here is a pic we took last year of a larger individual.

They have really large eyes as they are nocturnal and a long, flattish tail. They are called flying squirrels as they glide between trees as if flying.

Last night at dusk we had four hares in the garden. They were all eating off the ground round the tree, suddenly one started to chase the other off and they went into some bazaar jumping up and down ritual. It was hilarious to watch as they were leaping really high. I suspect they were also boxing, but they were too far away to see properly.
